BRYAN BARTLEY

Bryan started painting 45 years ago with five years of evening classes at the Auckland Society of Arts. He remarried and, with a busy engineering career, dropped all painting and art activity. Now 40 years on and well retired, Bryan is old enough to start again. He has found painting in oils a good hobby and has attended some painting classes with his wife. Bryan’s main interest is in portraits, particularly of his great grandchildren, with images involving their activities. For Bryan, general scenes need to have people bringing a life interest or story into the image and to involve warmth and colour.

AFRICAN ELEPHANT
Oil on canvas
by Joyce Mowbray

This portrayal of the “African Elephant” (African Mashona name of ‘NZO’) in oils on canvas was inspired by the array of colours and textures of its wonderful skin, and the desire to express these in this expressive medium.

JOYCE MOWBRAY

As Africa was Joyce‘s home for many years, it is natural for her to paint animals. Self taught and only starting to paint in later life, Joyce has a real feeling for animals, and has the ability to personalise and immortalise the animal she portrays, whether in oils, pastels, watercolours and latterly in coloured pencil. Commissions for pet portraits are usually accepted, and even when working from old photographs, your much loved pet may once again become part of your lives, long after it has passed on into pet pastures new!

Lindsay Mayo

Lindsay is a semi-retired civil engineer, who comes from a family of artists, and who paints for leisure. In addition to his art, his engineering and his family, Lindsay is a church bell ringer, a classic car owner, and has interests in farming. These various interests lead to his favourite art subjects, namely New Zealand landscapes; early English buildings; and classic motorsport. He paints primarily in oils, and is generally a realist in style, with the occasional foray into abstracts. He is a Past President of The New Zealand Fellowship of Artists, and paints regularly with two English groups of which he is a member. A majority of his work is retained by his family.

SOAR
Acrylic on canvas 600 x 900 mm
by Thonia Brooks

In this painting Thonia was inspired by the albatross found in Northland; it had lost its way to the south pole earlier this year. The painting reflects how, in the release of fear and uncertainty we find our power and freedom - it is there that the spirit will soar.

THONIA BROOKS

After suffering a serious stroke in 2010, which left her unable to return to work, Thonia started painting 22 months ago at Spark Centre as part of her recovery. She is an abstract artist who uses colour and texture to explore and evoke nuances of the journey of the human spirit. In 2013 Thonia successfully participated in Spark Centre group exhibitions with other artists living with disability. She continues to attend the visual arts group, mainly with other stroke affected artists.
